Community Nutrition Educator for Community Food Initiatives
Position
Summary:
The Community Nutrition Educator for Community Food Initiatives (CFI) is responsible for 80% of the nutrition education, program implementation, and reporting requirements for the Just Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables program and the Just Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables at the Farmers' Market.
The Community Nutrition Educator for CFI is also responsible for the execution and management of Food Bank of Central New York's seasonal programs; Central New York Health Bucks, Garden on the Go, and other nutrition programs as assigned.
CNY Health Bucks:
o Coordinate Central New York Health Bucks program (CNYHB); collaborate with New York State Farmers Market Federation and Community Nutrition Manager (CNM) to determine markets to promote CNYHB distributiono Collaborate with CNM and other Food Bank nutritionists to select partner member programs to market CNYHBo Collaborate with Communications Manager to develop CNY Health Bucks coupon design and arrange printing of materialso Create education lesson, materials, and post presentation survey to be used to present at partner programs, enhancing redemption of CNY Health Bucks at participating farmers' marketso Distribute CNY Health Bucks to farmers' markets and Food Bank Community Nutrition Educators and track distributiono Plan, schedule, and conduct CNY Health Bucks workshops for distribution of coupons to households accessing partner member food pantries and meal siteso Complete and submit annual reports for CNY Health BucksGarden on the Go:
o Coordinate Garden on the Go program for distribution to partner agencieso Coordinate acquisition of plants, seeds and root pouches for programo Work with Communications Manager to develop marketing materials and printing of care instructionso Collaborate with Development staff for volunteers to assemble kits and Operations staff for distributionJust Say Yes to Fruits & Vegetables:
o Assist in the implementation of a comprehensive nutrition education and obesity prevention program for low- income individuals accessing emergency food programso Identify food pantries, shelters and soup kitchens that will participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Education Program (SNAP-Ed); participate in SNAP-Ed related dutieso Plan, schedule, and conduct required minimum deliverable of 6 JSY nutrition education session and recipe demonstrations per month with at least 8 SNAP-eligible individuals per workshop at food pantries, soup kitchens, Fresh Food sites, and community organizationso Market JSY nutritional education sessions to food pantry operators and community partners to highlight nutrition education training opportunities that are available via printed materials and postings to the JSY public websiteo Promote the JSY Healthy Pantry Initiative (HPI) by increasing accessibility, distribution, and consumption of health foods; market JSY HPI to member food pantry programso Implement required HPIs (3) per year at partner member food pantrieso Create and post a minimum, 1 social media post/month related to JSY program in collaboration with staff and Social Media Committeeo Perform electronic recordkeeping and data collection internally and for JSY reporting to NYSDOH; submit monthly and quarterly JSY & other reports/documents in an accurate and timely manner to the CNMo Occasional nights/weekends dependent on partner program hours of operationJust Say Yes to Fruits & Vegetables at the Farmers' Market:
o Assist in the implementation of a comprehensive nutrition education and obesity prevention program for low- income individuals visiting the Downtown Syracuse Farmers' Marketo Work with Downtown Syracuse Farmers' Market Manager to schedule and coordinate delivery of program supplies and implementation of program each yearo Plan and conduct 4 lessons each week for 13 weeks from July to Septembero Perform electronic recordkeeping and data collection internally and for JSY reporting to NYSDOH; submit monthly and quarterly JSY & other reports/documents in an accurate and timely manner to the CNMNutrition Education:
o Identify and respond to partner member nutrition education needs; collaborate with other nutrition educators to provide appropriate education materialso Monitor all expenses with guidance from CNM and Finance departmento Assist, as needed, with dietetic interns or diet technician interns placed at Food BankPublic Health:
o Assist with implementation of staff wellness program - lead/attend worksite employee engagement and wellness committee meetings, organize events, provide onsite information, and maintain records for programo Create weekly wellness emails to be shared with Foodbank stafLocation:

00pm (with occasional nights and/or weekends, and overnight conferences)Education o Registered Dietitian or Dietetic Technician, Registered OR o Bachelor's in Nutrition, Public Health, Health Education, or related field with at least 3 credit hours in introductory nutrition and 6 credit hours in community health, public health, health education or food scienceOR o Associate's degree in NutritionExperience o 1-2 years' community outreach and education experience working with low-income populations o This can include intern or volunteer experienceKnowledge/Skills/Abilities o Ability to work with and design educational experiences for people of diverse ages, socio-economic status, and cultural heritage o Strong written, verbal, and computer communication skills o Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to represent the agency mission and services o Experience with facilitated group discussion techniques and educations o Ability to purchase food and prepare recipes for nutrition education demonstrations o Proficient in basic cooking skills o Ability to be flexible and manage a variable schedule o Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with other professionals and the public o Understand the connection of public health/trauma/nutrition, hunger, and the short and long term causes o Ability to plan, evaluate, and analyze programs and related data to work efficiently and effectively o ServSafe or other food safety certification recognized by the Conference on Food Protection OR must successfully complete ServSafe Food Manager Training for certification within 30 days of hirePhysical o Ability to follow recipes and have some cooking skills o Ability to lift 30
